Aww…knew it couldn’t be that easy to get rid of him. Why is it those pets you want to stick around are the ones that *do* bolt out the door the second it opens??
Actually, that is part and parcel to intelligent birds like cockatoos and Parrots. The birds know the stand very little chance of survival alone and actually prefer to stay with their human ‘pets’.
It is only as young birds you have to clip their wing feathers (not the wings, themselves).
The friend I had who kept a parrot regularly walked around outside with the parrot on his shoulder (it learned the head was not preferred… by the human). That bird may fly off occasionally; but you better leave the kitchen window open at dusk (he WILL come thru it and berate you if it wasn’t open).
The was one tough bird. Old sucker, too. My friend’s grandfather acquired him… before having children.
my roomie in college had a cockatiel- very possessive, intelligent bird- thought tara was her mate (yes, i did say her) would drop things off edge of desk just to watch them fall. Eventually, we tied a dog biscuit to a string, and ari’d haul it back up. Over and over. she wouldn’t whistle while tara was in the room, tho -only as we were walking in the hall.
One gorgeously sunny day in May, Tara took Ari out with her- wing feathers clipped a while before and went sunbathing. Ari had never seen Lake Ontario, didn’t recognize water vs land, and so took off for canada and tried to land on the VERY cold waves. Tara jumped in after her. Ari was fine, Tara ended up w/ a major case of pneumonia right in time for finals. Needless to say, Tara was EXTRA careful after that…. Ari also, btw, loved spaghetti and chicken soup. Would steal from our dishes when our backs were turned.
I have seen so many of these birds in bright, happy colors (and most were VERY multi-colored).
Notice I have no problems with the eye color. I’ve seen a few with red, blue, purple, green, and other colors (My friend runs an aviary at the local zoo… family tradition), though I suspect Winston’s eye color is a accurate ‘reflection’ of his attitude.
That is my kind of Cockatoo. And first I think.
He’s everybody’s kind of Cockatoo! Well, almost …

Get rid of Winston?! Heresy!
Haha, she and Winston are going to get along wonderfully…
Ulf snack??
You’ve got the accent and attitude for Winston perfect! By the way Connie, you won’t be getting rid of Winston like that!
Thanks! I say the dialogue out loud before writing it down, to make sure I get the accent right.

Sure she can mail Winston back…
Have you ever tried to catch a bird that didn’t want to be captured?
Especially one as evilly armed as a cockatoo?
You willing to lose fingers?
Tennis racket.
Why did Winston have to be a slate-grey?

Do you know of many Black Palm Cockatoos that aren’t?
